EP synthetized a large number of molecules, potentially effective in the respiratory field. After a careful screening, Erdosteine was selected as a candidate for a complete development.

As a consequence of this selection, erdosteine underwent a comprehensive plan of clinical and pharmacological studies, that lighted its peculiar features as:

- mucomodulator
- anti-oxidant
- anti-bacterial
- anti-inflammatory

Its clinical efficacy is combined with an excellent, placebo-like, safety profile.

Its features make it particularly suitable for the treatment of Chronic Bronchitis (CB) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), both in clinically stable COPD and during exacerbations.

Erdosteine is the only mucolytic indicated by the Guidelines of the American College of Chest Physicians for the effectiveness in improving cough clearance in chronic bronchitis.

Since its introduction Erdosteine has proved to be a promising drug, now available in capsules, sachets, sospension and soon also dispersible tablets. Erdosteine is approved and marketed in more than forty countries worldwide.

In US the development of erdosteine is in clinical phase II under an active IND with the FDA.

Several patents have been granted to Erdosteine and others covering also enantiomers are applied for.
